Green Schools Award
Birla Balika Vidyapeeth is a residential public school for girls, situated in Pilani, Rajasthan. It is an institution which believes in sensitization the students towards the conservation of environment, which is a burning issue today. The school has been awarded The Prestigious Green Schools’ Award 2015 by Centre for Science and Environment by Dr. Sunita Narain in a grand function at India International Centre, New Delhi.
The students of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth carry out several eco-friendly activities. They help in nurturing the green cover in the campus by planting trees and taking care of them. The school has a green house with several medicinal aromatic plants which is well managed by students and learns about the importance and use of each plant. The waste is segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable using two types of dustbins. The mess kitchen waste material is used for composting and vermin-composting. The use of polythene and plastic bottles in the campus is discouraged. The paper, plastic and e-waste is given to the authorized dealers for recycling and reuse. Environment awareness programmes and campaign are frequently organized by the students in nearby villages, communicate to promote clean and green environment and they also make them aware about issues like waste segregation, importance of trees, water conservation, pollution problems and other health practices.
The student believes about the three R’s of conservation of natural resources: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The student’s old books an left over notebooks are distributed to needy children. The waste materials like old bottles, cloth etc. also utilized by students for making decorative and other useful items by reusing them. The students are given responsibility to check the leaky taps and extra switch on lights etc.
The school has the facility for conservation rainwater which is used for gardening inside and outside of the school. The hostels have solar water heater system and solar light installed for reducing the energy consumption. The school has also undertaken an initiative to replace all the illumination devices by the LED in phased manner. The classrooms have large windows to allow in ample of natural light.
The role played by students in protecting the natural environment by them small efforts is always encouraged as a small step can turn into giant leap. Receiving green school award by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) recognizing school’s eco-friendly efforts has provided future impetus and encouragement to carry out this work for the betterment of present and future generation.
