A CONSTANT CELEBRATION: PI APPROXIMATION DAY AT BIRLA BALIKA VIDYAPEETH, PILANI

Mathematics is often called the language of the universe, and at Birla Balika Vidyapeeth (BBV), Pilani, Girls Residential School that language was spoken with creativity, logic, and plenty of “Pi-zazz” this past July. On 21st and 22nd July 2025, the Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani Department of Mathematics turned the school into a hub of Numerical wonder to celebrate Pi Approximation Day.
Why July 22nd? Because in the fraction format used in many parts of the world, it is written as 22/7, the most famous approximation of the Mathematical constant ฯ€.
Day 1: Creativity Meets Calculation
The festivities kicked off on July 21st with a focus on both articulation and art.
โ€ข Symposium Competition: Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani students from Classes IX and X took to the podium, presenting insightful perspectives on Mathematical concepts, proving that Math is as much about communication as it is about calculation.
โ€ข The Maths Mela: This was the heart of the first dayโ€™s celebrations. Students from Classes V to IX showcased their ingenuity by integrating Art with Mathematics. Using waste materials, they created vibrant models and exhibits that brought abstract theories to life.
โ€ข Community Spirit: The Mela wasn’t just a BBV affair; students from other BET schools in Pilani visited, and shared in the learning, fostering a wonderful spirit of collaboration.

Day 2: Expert Insights and Alumni Pride
The second day shifted the focus toward deeper understanding and healthy competition.
โ€ข A Special Assembly: The morning began with a dedicated assembly explaining the history and significance of the number 22/7.
โ€ข Guest Lecture by Dr. Trilok Mathur: Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani was honoured to host Dr. Trilok Mathur, Associate Professor at BITS Pilani. He captivated the audience with clever mnemonics and fun techniques to remember the infinite digits of Pi, making the complex seem effortless.
โ€ข Inter-House Maths Quiz: Adding a touch of nostalgia and high-stakes excitement, the quiz was conducted by Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani Alumna Batch of 2023: Ms. Manya Varshney and Ms. Vedanshi. Their return as alumni added a layer of inspiration for the current students.
โ€ข Movie Magic: The celebrations concluded on a high note with a special movie screening based on the concept of Pi, allowing students to see the “beauty of the ratio” through a cinematic lens.

Leadership and Vision
The event was seamlessly organized by the BBV Mathematics Department under the expert guidance of Head of Department, Mrs. Savitri Dhayal.
The gathering was also addressed by Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani Principal, Mrs. Achala Verma (National Awardee). In an inspiring speech, she emphasized that Mathematics is not just a subject but a beautiful art form. She encouraged the BBV students to dive deep into the world of numbers and consider the vast career opportunities that a strong foundation in Maths can provide.
At BBV, Pi Approximation Day was more than just a date on the calendar; it was a reminder that when we approximate Pi, we are actually getting closer to understanding the world around us.
