Every year on 22 July, Mathematics enthusiasts around the World celebrate Pi -Approximation Day. The date, written as 22/7, represents the famous fraction 22/7, one of the oldest and most widely used approximations of the Mathematical constant π (pi).
Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. No matter how big or small a circle is, this ratio remains the same. The value of pi is approximately 3.1415926535…, and its decimal expansion continues forever without repeating. Because of this, pi (π) is known as an irrational number.
Long before modern calculators existed, Mathematicians searched for simple ways to estimate pi (π). The fraction 22/7, attributed to the ancient Greek Mathematician Archimedes, gives a remarkably close approximation and has been used for centuries in Geometry, Engineering, and everyday calculations. This is why 22July is observed as Pi Approximation Day.
Pi is much more than a number found in textbooks. It is essential in calculating the circumference, area, and volume of circular and spherical objects. Engineers use pi to design bridges, tunnels, and machines. Scientists rely on it to study planetary motion, waves, electricity, and quantum physics. It also plays a vital role in Architecture, Medicine, Computer Graphics, Navigation, and Space Exploration.
The study of pi has also been enriched by the contributions of Indian Mathematicians. Scholars such as Aryabhata and later the Kerala School of Mathematics, led by Madhava of Sangamagrama, made significant advances in understanding and calculating pi with remarkable accuracy centuries before the development of Modern Calculus. Their work highlights India’s rich Mathematical heritage and its lasting impact on the world.
Pi-approximation Day is an opportunity to look beyond formulas and recognize Mathematics as a subject of Creativity, Logic, and Discovery. Through activities such as Circle Measurements, Mathematical Quizzes, Puzzles, and Model-making, students can experience how Mathematical ideas connect with the real world.

As part of our celebration of Pi-approximation Day at Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani, I, Payas Jain, recited the value of (pi) up to 50 decimal places. Pi (π) is a unique irrational number whose decimal expansion never ends and never repeats. Memorizing its digits is not just a demonstration of memory—it is a tribute to one of the most fascinating constants in Mathematics, which plays a vital role in Science, Engineering, and everyday life.
