Π IN MOTION: WHERE MATHEMATICS MET CREATIVITY AT BIRLA BALIKA VIDYAPEETH, PILANI

22 July 2026 will remain a memorable day for the Mathematics Department of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth (BBV), Pilani). What began as an idea to celebrate Pi-Approximation Day transformed into a vibrant demonstration of Mathematical Creativity, Teamwork, Discipline, and Experiential Learning.
The occasion became even more significant as the celebration was organized during the Opening Ceremony of the All India IPSC Pre-Subroto Cup Football Tournament (U-17 Girls) at BBVP. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talent and Mathematical spirit of BBV students before a distinguished gathering.

The event was graced by Ms. Happy Khichar, U-19 Indian Cricketer and Women’s Premier League player of Gujarat Giants, as the Chief Guest, in the August presence of Maj. Gen. S. S. Nair, AVSM, Director, Birla Education Trust, Pilani; Mr. Ajay Aggarwal, Deputy Director, BET; and the Principals of various BET schools.
From an Idea to an Iconic Pi
As the Head of the Mathematics Department, I have always believed that students learn Mathematics best when they Experience, Visualize, Create with it, and Connect it with the world around them. With this philosophy in mind, the idea of creating the Mathematical symbol π using Rubik’s Cubes took shape.
The challenge was immense. It required 70 students to work with perfect Coordination, Concentration, Timing, and Precision under the mentorship of Mrs. Poonam Yadav and Ms. Aakansha Gupta. Every student had a specific role, and the success of the final formation depended upon the contribution of every individual.
The moment finally arrived.
The announcer introduced the presentation, drawing the attention of the audience to the unique Mathematical spectacle:
On this special occasion of Pi-Approximation Day, the talented students of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth were all set to showcase a remarkable blend of Mathematical thinking, precision, creativity, and teamwork through a spectacular Rubik’s Cube display.”
As the students began moving their colourful cubes into position, the audience witnessed Mathematics taking a completely different form.
The 70 students were seen working in perfect synchronization, as colourful Rubik’s Cubes come together to create a fascinating Mathematical pattern—symbolizing Patience, Precision, Teamwork, and Mathematical excellence.”
With every movement, the anticipation grew. The colourful cubes gradually began revealing the form that the students had practiced so meticulously.
The formation neared its final stage, and with the placement of the last few cubes, the iconic Mathematical symbol π emerged before the audience.
And then came the most awaited moment—the final cubes fell into place, revealing π in all its colourful splendor.
The magnificent formation was complete! The 70 young Mathematicians of BBVP successfully transformed Rubik’s Cubes into the iconic symbol of π—a remarkable celebration of Mathematical Creativity, Coordination, and Precision.
The applause that followed was a moment of immense pride for all of us.
The Story Behind Pi
The Rubik’s Cube formation complemented by Shivika Tyagi of Class IX, who confidently enlightened the audience about π, its importance in Mathematics, and the significance of Pi-Approximation Day. Her presentation helped the audience appreciate that Pi is not simply a number memorized from a textbook but a Mathematical constant with applications extending across Geometry, Science, Engineering, Technology, and everyday life.
Adding another fascinating dimension to the celebration, Payas Jain of Class VIII confidently recited the value of π up to 50 decimal places. Her impressive performance reflected the concentration, preparation, and enthusiasm that BBV students bring to Mathematical challenges.
Mathematics Beyond Numbers
Another significant component of the celebration was the display of informative posters on “Modern Approaches to Mathematics” and “From the Astrolabe to GPS – Navigating the Physical World” mentored by Mrs. KK Padmasri and Mrs. Rini Abraham.
These exhibits were particularly meaningful because they demonstrated how Mathematics has evolved alongside human civilization and technological advancement.
From the ancient Astrolabe, which helped people understand and navigate the heavens, to modern GPS technology, Mathematics has remained at the heart of our attempts to understand, measure, locate, and navigate our physical world.
The students’ work beautifully conveyed a message that I often share with them:
Mathematics is not confined to the pages of a textbook; it is present in every Pattern, Measurement, Movement, Design, Structure, and Technological Innovation around us.
A Moment of Pride for the Mathematics Department
The appreciation received from Maj. Gen. S. S. Nair, AVSM, Director, Birla Education Trust, Pilani; Mr. Ajay Aggarwal, Deputy Director, BET and the other distinguished guests was deeply encouraging for our students and the entire Mathematics Department. The guests applauded the students for their discipline, confidence, coordination, and innovative presentation.

The encouragement from Mrs. Achala Verma, National Awardee Principal of BBVP was particularly motivating. She appreciated the dedicated efforts of the Mathematics Department and encouraged students to continue exploring Mathematics through Creative, Experiential, and Innovative Learning Experiences.

As the Head of the Mathematics Department, I extend my hearty appreciation to every student and every member of BBV Mathematics Department who contributed to making of this celebration a great success. The achievement belongs not to one individual but to the collective effort of an enthusiastic team.

The preparation behind the Rubik’s Cube formation taught our students several lessons that no textbook could teach independently—Patience, Perseverance, Precision, Communication, Responsibility, Coordination, and Trust in one another.

As an educator and Head of the BBV Mathematics Department, moments like these reaffirm our belief at BBV that our responsibility is not merely to teach students how to solve a problem, but to inspire them to look at problems differently, ask questions, experiment fearlessly, and discover the beauty of Mathematics for themselves.

A Celebration to Remember

The Pi-Approximation Day celebration at BBVP successfully brought together Mathematics, Art, Technology, Memory, Teamwork, Communication, and Creativity on one platform.

It was heartening to see our students step beyond conventional learning and confidently present Mathematics before such a distinguished audience.

The celebration concluded with a warm acknowledgement of the young Mathematicians who had created the spectacular Pi formation.

“The young Mathematicians of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth have presented a truly unique celebration of Pi, demonstrating how Mathematics can be transformed into Art through Creativity, Teamwork, and Innovation!”

For the Mathematics Department of BBVP, this was not simply a celebration of π. It was a celebration of our students—their imagination, perseverance, confidence, and ability to turn an idea into reality.

“When students stop merely learning Mathematics and begin creating with it, Mathematics becomes more than a subject—it becomes a way of thinking, imagining, and transforming the world.”
