“When imagination meets skill, young minds build wonders — one cube at a time.”
As a student, you usually think of a Rubik’s Cube as a personal challenge—something you fiddle with during a break or a quiet way to test your own speed. But on October 14, 2025, during our 84th Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani Annual Day Outdoor Activity, we turned that solitary puzzle into a massive statement of National pride.
Being a Captain for the “BBV Tricolour Harmony” project was, quite honestly, one of the most intense and rewarding experiences of my school life. Here is how we turned 120 students and hundreds of cubes into a tribute to Skill India.
The Challenge: 120 Minds, One Mosaic
When the idea was first proposed under the guidance of our Principal, Mrs. Achala Verma & HOD Mrs. Savitri Dhayal, it felt like a dream. It was a challenging task to manage 120 students, ranging from the energetic Class V Juniors to the busy Class XII Seniors, to work on a single image.
As mentors, I, Ichchha of Class XII and Manya Garg of Class XI, students of Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani, a renowned Girls Residential School, knew this wasn’t just about “solving” a cube. We had to teach everyone how to “set” a cube—manipulating only the top face to act as a specific “pixel” in our Giant Indian Tricolour.
Training the “Skill India” Way
The preparation phase was where the real magic happened. Under the mentorship of Mrs. Savitri Dhayal (HOD Mathematics), Mrs. Poonam Yadav, and Ms. Aakansha Gupta, our training sessions evolved into a sophisticated centre of Innovation, rather than just solving puzzles, we operated like a strategic task force. We broke the project down into technical modules:
• Logic over Luck: We taught the younger students that every turn had a purpose.
• Precision: We ensured that each piece of cube is perfectly fitted into their place.
• Patience: There were moments of patience check when a cube would pop or a pattern was reversed, but the teamwork kept us going.
Engineering the Foundation: Precision Before the First Move
Before a single cube was solved, we faced our first major challenge: the foundation. A mosaic of this scale doesn’t just happen; it requires an unwavering base.
Manya and I, along with our fellow students, took on the responsibility of constructing the base of the Tricolour ourselves. This wasn’t just manual labor; it was an exercise in pure precision. We spent hours calculating the exact dimensions to ensure the frame could support the weight and alignment of the cubes.
Using the principles of measurement and geometry, we ensured that every centimeter was accounted for. This foundation became a metaphor for the project itself—built by our own hands, with the accuracy required to hold a masterpiece together.
The Big Day: Watching the Tricolour Rise
Standing on the field, seeing 120 of my peers holding their completed sections, was surreal. As we began assembling the mosaic, you could feel the shift in energy. It wasn’t just a Maths project anymore; it was a symbol of Unity.
When the final cubes were placed, showing the Saffron, White, and Green with the BBV logo and Skill India symbols perfectly aligned, the cheers were deafening. We hadn’t just built a mosaic; we had demonstrated analytical thinking, spatial awareness, and the power of collaborative skill.
My Biggest Takeaway
This project taught me that leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about helping others find their place in the bigger picture. The Rubik’s Cube Tricolour now stands as a reminder that at BBV, we don’t just learn skills; we live them.
I feel indebted to the Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani fraternity, that they provide us Wings to Fly and showcase the best of individual’s skills.
