The day Statistics Visited our Classroom in Birla Balika Vidyapeeth, Pilani.
It was an ordinary Monday morning. The blackboard was clean. The students were restless. Just then, our teacher wrote one word in bold letters: STATISTICS
A murmur ran across the classroom. Suddenly, in our imagination, a gentle old scholar walked in — carrying a notebook full of numbers. He introduced himself: “I am Statistics. I do not just count numbers… I reveal stories.”
Statistics asked, “Tell me, how many hours do you study daily?”
The class buzzed with answers:
1 hour… 2 hours… 3 hours… 4 hours…
He smiled and said: “Now let us listen to what your numbers are trying to say.”
The answers were arranged carefully.
Study Hours Number of Students
1 —————-5
2—————- 8
3—————- 5
4 —————-2
“Raw data is like scattered thoughts,” Statistics explained.
“When organized, it becomes meaningful.”
Statistics then called upon his three trusted friends:
1. Mean – The Balancer
Mean adds everyone’s voice and shares it equally. It tells us the overall average study time.
2. Median – The Peacemaker
Median stands exactly in the middle. It is calm, unaffected by extremes.
3. Mode – The Popular One
Mode shows what most students prefer. It reveals the common habit.
The students realized — each measure tells a slightly different truth.
Statistics looked at the class and said: “If one student studies 8 hours while most study 2 hours, Will the average truly represent everyone?”
The room fell silent.
Numbers were no longer just calculations. They were reflections of real lives.
Statistics whispered:
• Schools use data to improve results.
• Doctors use data to treat patients.
• Governments use data to plan policies.
• Even cricket teams analyze performance data before matches.
“Where there is decision,” he said, “There is Statistics.”
Moral of the Story
Statistics is not about memorizing formulas. It is about listening to patterns, interpreting meaning, thinking critically, and making informed decisions.
